Rise of Social Media in Politics
With only 31 days left for the US elections, the US and the world awaits the decision of the 2024 presidential campaigns that will change the political landscape but amidst this chaos, Kamala HQ, the official presidential campaign has been an exciting amalgamation of political discourse and humour.
Social media is revolutionising modern politics, fundamentally altering how politicians engage with their audiences and communicate their messages. This shift is redefining political discourse and strategy in ways we’re only beginning to understand. Kamala HQ, the official campaign page for Kamala Harris’s presidential run, serves as a masterclass in effectively marketing to younger audiences. Kamala Harris is an American politician and senator who has been faithfully serving as the 49th Vice President of USA since 2021 and is currently running for President. The account also serves as a rebranding of the current Vice President Mrs Harris as her presidential campaign was sudden and required an essential and quick response.
On Tiktok, Kamala HQ executed a brilliant tactic by using a trending audio to make a humorous attempt to joke about Trump's fundraising issues which resulted in almost 20 million views in less than three days. This shows us the power and understanding of the timing of a trend to reach more people. This has unfortunately been met with some criticism as well by pointing out meme culture dies quick and relying simply on social media marketing for the most part may not be sustainable in the long run. A lot of critics talk about how quick positive engagement can turn negative if they are not careful and intentional and some even term it as propaganda, nonetheless it is still an exciting turn of events in marketing within the political world and how important political information can be conveyed.
Kamala HQ was originally built to reach a younger audience through accessible and relatable content on Tiktok, YouTube and other social media. Unlike traditional political campaigns that usually relied on rallies and TV ads, Kamala HQ chose to inculcate social media as more than a strategic tactic but redefining political marketing. Started off as just mere memes, Kamala HQ now serves as the official social media account for Vice President Kamala Harris who is in the running to be president of the United States. This campaign is a testimony to how social media has evolved in terms of politics and the sheer impact it holds. As a Gen Z tiktok user myself, her team has brilliantly encapsulated her humorous spirit combined with her determination and will to bring revolutionary political change in the form of short viral videos and memes. This is not only a brilliant way to reach the younger audience and educate them but also a strategic way of using social media marketing to its optimum use.
The content itself is in the form of short clips and dancing videos mixed with a political message. It is also refreshing to see a humanizing side of politics that comes off authentic. There are multiple pop culture references to keep the younger audiences engaged and also increase the virality of the content. UGC content and collaborating with influencers has also been an interesting way to amplify social media reach. Personalized story-telling was an amazing way of making her relatable with the audience and make us understand her values and mission.
Kamala HQ has set the tone for future political campaigns and redefined political figures and used social media to connect with audiences.
