The right to effective treatment (Van Houton et al. 1988) is a cornerstone for our field, historically setting us apart from other disciplines. A recent 'call to action' for Behaviour Analysts to revisit, reaffirm, and reassess how we uphold these rights today (Kelly et al, 2024) is critical for our evolving field within the context of our current world. When following/using evidence-based practice, we are recommending to our clients services that ethically incorporate with equal importance, a) the best available evidence (research evidence base), b) our own competence/experience, and c) the client's context, culture, preferences, and needs etc. (Brodhead, Cox, & Quigley, 2018, CPBAO Standard 10.4). But what do we do when the best available evidence is lacking or doesn't align with what our clients want or need? This gamified event will explore this tricky topic centered around the many ethical decisions (minor and major) behaviour analysts navigate in using the evidence based practice approach in today's world. Together we will a) explore the ongoing dilemma of the 'Research to Practice' gap and how this impacts decisions with clients, supervisors/supervisees, and organizations, b) practice evaluating and communicating ethical risks vs benefits of proceeding with a case when the evidence is lacking or conflicting, and c) discuss obstacles to quality service delivery and solutions for holding our clients rights to effective treatment now and in the future.
